MANJÓN, ANDRÉS. - Spanish pedagogue and canonist, b. at Sargentes (Burgos) on 30 Nov. 1846, d. at Granada on 10 July 1923. He studied at the Seminary of Burgos, but took Orders only in 1886, after having earned a degree in jurisprudence and having become a lecturer in canon law at Santiago and at Granada.
In 1889 he founded the Escuelas del Ave-Marin, an institution for poor children, where he applied a pedagogical method of his own (the intuitive method). The Escuelas, which occupied him for his whole life, are today spread throughout Spain. He never wished to accept any other office or dignity and even refused the episcopate, because he feared he would necessarily have to neglect the institution he had founded. Among his works are remembered the well-known volume of Derecho eclesiástico; the Instituciones de derecho canónico; El Pensamiento del Ave-Maria (1901, in which he describes the pedagogical method).
