ANDRES MANJON. - Spanish pedagogue and canonist, b. at Sargentes (Burgos) on 30 Nov. 1846, d. at Granada on 10 July 1923. He studied at the Seminary of Burgos, but was ordained only in 1886, after taking a degree in law and becoming a teacher of canon law at Santiago and Granada.
In 1889 he founded the Escuelas del Ave-Maria, an institution for poor children, where he applied his own particular pedagogical method (the intuitive method). The Escuelas, which occupied him for his entire life, are today widespread throughout Spain. He never wished to accept any other office or dignity and even refused the episcopate, fearing that he would necessarily have to neglect the institution he had founded. Among his works are the well-known volume on ecclesiastical law; the Instituciones de derecho canónico; and El Pensamiento del Ave-Maria (1901), in which he describes the pedagogical method.
