MANJON, ANDRÉS. - Spanish pedagogue and canonist, b. at Sargentes (Burgos) on 30 Nov. 1846, d. at Granada on 10 July 1923. He studied at the Seminary of Burgos, but took Holy Orders only in 1886, after graduating in law and becoming professor of canon law at Santiago and Granada.
In 1889 he founded the Escuelas del Ave-Marin, an institution for poor children, where he applied his own particular pedagogical method (the intuitive method). The Escuelas, which occupied him throughout his life, are now widespread throughout Spain. He never wished to accept any other office or dignity and also refused the episcopate, because he feared that he would necessarily have to neglect the institution he had founded. Among his works may be mentioned the well-known volume Derecho eclesiástico; the Instituciones de derecho canónico; El Pensamiento del Ave-Maria (1901, in which he describes the pedagogical method).
