MARBURG SCHOOL. - It is one of the two principal directions of German neo-Kantianism; its founder was Hermann Cohen (v.; 1842-1918); and its principal continuators are Paul Natorp (v.; 1854-1924); and Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945).

Unlike the neo-Kantianism of the southwest, of Freiburg and Heidelberg, which applied itself to the "philosophy of values," the school of M. sought instead to clarify the foundations of the mathematical and natural sciences through the theory of "productive thought," elevating logic to the rank of fundamental discipline. In its first phase, the philosophy of N. Hartmann (1882-1950) is also connected with the school of M.; he later drew close to phenomenology in order to construct a metaphysics and a theory of values that make substantial concessions to traditional realism (v. NEOCRITICISM).
