MEKHILTHA' (Aram. « Measure »). - Midrash (v.), a collection of interpretive and methodological material concerning the Pentateuch, of a preceptive-narrative character and referring principally to Exodus (ed. M. Friedmann, Vienna 1870; recent edition by Lauterbach).

It is a pseudo-epigraphic midrash, in that it is attributed to the tannaim (v.) of the 2nd century A.D., R. Ishmael and Simeon ben Yohai. It is not excluded that the oldest elements come from the teaching of the said masters, but on the whole the M. was enriched with additions due to doctors of the following generations.
