MENAS, Patriarch of Constantinople, Saint. - Born in Alexandria toward the end of the 5th century, died in Constantinople in August 552. He was in charge of the great hospice for pilgrims of St. Samson in that city, when in 536 he was elected by Pope Agapetus as patriarch of Constantinople after the deposition of Anthimus I (v.).
On April 22 of the same year Agapetus died, and M. presided over the council that began on May 2, in which Anthimus was excommunicated together with other adherents of his. In the famous question of the "Three Chapters" (v.), M. signed and induced the Eastern bishops to sign the condemnation of the same, and Pope Vigilius excommunicated him together with all the signatories. The controversy had a very long aftermath; but M. acknowledged his fault and retracted what he had subscribed to only out of weakness. The Roman Martyrology records his name on August 25.
