MENARD, NICOLAS-HUGUES. — Historian and liturgist, born in Paris in 1585, died there on 20 January 1644. He professed the Rule of St Benedict at St Denis in 1612. In 1615 he entered the Congregation of St Maur and lived in the monastery of St-Germain-des-Prés, where he devoted himself to the study of ecclesiastical history and patrology.
He published the *Martyrologium Sanctorum Ordinis S. Benedicti* (Paris 1626), the *Concordia regularum cum Regula s. Benedicti abbatis* (ibid. 1638), the *Sacramentarium s. Gregorii Magni* (ibid. 1642), and the *Diatriba de unico Dionysio* (ibid. 1643), in which he upheld the identity of the two Dionysius figures: the Areopagite and the one of Paris. The edition of the *Sacramentarium* is now consulted only for its notes.
