MÉNARD, NICOLAS-HUGUES. - Historian and liturgist, b. in Paris in 1585, d. there on 20 January 1644. He professed the Rule of St. Benedict at St-Denis in 1612. In 1615 he entered the Congregation of St. Maur and lived in the monastery of St-Germain-des-Prés, where he devoted himself to the study of ecclesiastical history and patrology.

He published the Martyrologium Sanctorum Ordinis S. Benedicti (Paris 1626), the Concordia regularum cum Regula s. Benedicti abbatis (there 1638), the Sacramentarium s. Gregorii Magni (there 1642) and the Diatriba de unico Dionysio (there 1643), maintaining the identity of the two Dionysiuses: the Areopagite and of Paris. The edition of the Sacramentarium should today be consulted only for the notes.
