MATTIOLI, GUGLIELMO. - Musician, b. in Reggio Emilia on 14 Oct. 1859, d. in Bologna on 7 May 1924. Having graduated from the Liceo musicale of Bologna in 1881, he was subsequently a teacher at the Scuola musicale of Reggio Emilia and from 1895 to 1897 a professor at the Conservatory of Parma; from 1897 to 1901 at the Liceo musicale of Pesaro, and in the years 1901-1908 director of the Istituto musicale Donizetti of Bergamo, where he was also choirmaster at S. Maria Maggiore. Transferred to Bologna, he was a teacher and director of the Liceo musicale.
An indefatigable and convinced pioneer of the reform of sacred music, he composed: masses, motets, psalms, hymns and pieces for organ, the Immacolata, a poem for soloists, chorus and orchestra, and some operas. At his death he had ready for the press an extensive Trattato pratico e ragionato di composizione polifonica, in 7 vols.
