MATTIOLI, GUGLIELMO. - Musician, b. at Reggio Emilia on 14 Oct. 1859, d. at Bologna on 7 May 1924. Having graduated from the Liceo musicale of Bologna in 1881, he subsequently taught at the Scuola musicale of Reggio Emilia and, from 1895 to 1897, was professor at the Conservatorio of Parma; from 1897 to 1901 at the Liceo musicale of Pesaro, and in the years 1901-1908 director of the Istituto musicale Donizetti of Bergamo, where he was also choirmaster at S. Maria Maggiore. Having moved to Bologna, he was teacher and director of the Liceo musicale.
An indefatigable and convinced pioneer of the reform of sacred music, he composed: masses, motets, psalms, hymns, and organ pieces; the Immacolata, a poem for soloists, chorus, and orchestra; and several operas. At his death he had ready for publication an extensive Trattato pratico e ragionato di composizione polifonica, in 7 vols.
