MICHAEL APOSTOLIOS. - Byzantine writer, b. in Constantinople ca. 1422, d. ca. 1480. He had a very unfortunate life, following the fall of Constantinople. He wanted to work in Italy under the patronage of Card. Bessarion, but he did not even manage to obtain a chair in Candia, the main center of his activity. He undertook journeys to discover manuscripts for Bessarion, which he himself then copied. He was the author of not a few works, whose value is slight, if one is to judge by those published.

The greatest interest of M. arises from his epistolary, which describes the pitiful state into which men of learning fell after the loss of Constantinople, while they spent their energies in useless discussions on dogmas.
