MELETIOS THE YOUNGER. - Wandering monk, b. at Mutalasca in Cappadocia ca. 1035, d. abbot of Symbolon in 1105. Venerated as a "saint" for his miracles and as one of the "myroblites" (from whose body a healing balsam flows), but his feast is not recorded in the Greek-Slavic ecclesiastical year.

Refusing marriage, he set out young for Constantinople to the monastery of the Chrysostomos. Soon, however, he undertook a pilgrimage to Palestine and Rome, but at Thessalonica he had a revelation to suspend it. Having withdrawn to the surroundings of Thebes, he built a church to St. George, which he later converted into the great monastery of Symbolon. After many years (1070) he was able to satisfy his desire to visit the Holy Places of Palestine, the tombs of the Apostles in Rome, and that of St. James of Compostela. It should be noted that M. is a contemporary of Michael Cerularius and that the schism had already been accomplished for several years (1054). Returning to the East, he lived for a long time on Mount Miupoli, where he built a chapel to the Savior (1085) which later became a monastery, and where he was ordained priest by the patriarch Nicholas.
