MARGUNIOS, MASSIMO. - 'Theologian and Orthodox' of the 16th century. Born in Candia (Crete) in 1549, died in Venice on 1 July 1602, prematurely snatched away from scholarship. He studied at Padua, but did not obtain his degree so as not to have to make the profession of the Catholic faith.

This doubt of his between the Roman faith and that of the schismatics later aroused in his very numerous treatises the theories of George Scholarios, always intermediate, on the Trinity and divine Providence. His effort to reconcile the different points of view of the Latin and Greek Fathers is interesting, however. By Gabriel Severus M. was accused of heresy as a Catholicizer, but the Holy Synod of Constantinople considered him « Orthodox ». Jeremiah II consecrated him bishop of Cythera, a see he never reached. Some works of M. have been published: others are found unpublished in great number in Jerusalem, Constantinople, Moscow and Bucharest.
