MISSIONARY SISTERS OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY. - The Institute was founded at Killeshandra, in the diocese of Kilmore (Ireland), by Msgr. Shanahan, apostolic vicar of Nigeria (Africa), principally for the missions in that vicariate, and was canonically erected on Sept. 17, 1924 by decree of the local bishop.

The decree of praise and of temporary approval of the Constitutions is dated Jan. 8, 1938; the definitive approval of these is dated Oct. 22, 1945.

The special purpose of the Institute is the Catholic education of youth and the care of the sick in the missions.

In 1948 the sisters numbered 133 and the novices 34, distributed in 13 houses, almost all of them in mission territory.
