MOOSBRUGGER, KASPAR. - Architect, b. July 22, 1656 at Au im Bregenzerwald, d. Aug. 26, 1723 at Einsiedeln. He worked in almost all of Catholic Switzerland, of which he is considered the greatest architect.
He provided designs and plans for the cloister of Disentis and of Muri, worked at Munsterlingen, at Sarnen, at Garfenort, Maristein, Bellinzona, Seedorf, Kalchrain, Rheinau, etc. Considered masterpieces of his activity are: the cloister of Einsiedeln, whose model dates from 1793 and which constitutes, with its sober yet pictorial movement of masses, one of the most complete and measured religious buildings of the Baroque; and the rebuilding of the monastery of St. Gall (already planned in 1720 and executed in 1755), whose original plan, however, was reworked by Peter Thumb and by M.'s son, Franz Beers, who completed the construction in 1767.
