MOOSBRUGGER, KASPAR. – Architect, b. 22 July 1656 at Au im Bregenzerwald, d. 26 Aug. 1723 at Einsiedeln. He worked throughout almost the entire Catholic Swiss region, of which he is regarded as its foremost architect.
He provided designs and plans for the cloisters of Disentis and Muri, worked at Münsterlingen, Sarnen, Glarus, Marsteln, Bellinzona, Seedorf, Kalchrain, Rheinau, etc. Masterpieces of his activity are considered: the cloister of Einsiedeln, whose model dates from 1703 and which, with its sober yet picturesque movement of masses, constitutes one of the most complete and measured religious buildings of the Baroque; and the rebuilding of the monastery of St Gall (already designed in 1720 and executed in 1755), whose original plan, however, was reworked by Peter Thumb and the son of M., Franz Beer, who completed the construction in 1707.
