MORETO Y CAVAÑA (CABAÑA), AGUSTÍN. - Spanish playwright of Italian origin, b. in Madrid on April 9, 1618, d. there between October 26 and 27, 1669.
He was court poet to Philip IV, a priest in 1654, and chaplain to the cardinal of Toledo Baltasar de Moscoso from 1657. He wrote about 50 plays: on biblical subjects (La cena del rey Baltasar) or hagiographic ones (El más ilustre francés s. Bernardo; Los siete dormientes; La vida de s. Alejo; S. Franco de Sena); historical ones (El valente justiciero y rico hombre de Alcalá); comedies of manners (El desdén con el desdén; El lindo don Diego).
An epigone of Lope and of Calderón, sometimes closer to us than either for modernity of feeling, yet in the theater he shows technical skill, a sense of rare measure, gentle comedy tinged at times with melancholy, moral interest, assiduous introspection, through a rapid and spontaneous dialogue, like his language and his verse, which faithfully marks the inner rhythm. He has been called "the Spanish Plautus."
