MIRA DE AMESCUA, ANTONIO. - Spanish poet, b. at Guadix around 1574, d. there on 8 September 1644. He was impatient of discipline in his life (even as archdeacon of the cathedral of his native city) and in his vast work as a writer for the theater, modeled on the forms of Lope de Vega.
In the autos (for Christmas, Eucharistic, Marian feasts) and in the biblical comedies his intuition of the symbol is weak; in the hagiographic ones and in those with historical and intrigue subjects, the constructive skill and the delineation of characters, sometimes struck out with strong relief, are generally effective. The style oscillates between popularizing attenuation, cultismo, and Calderonian splendor; his ethical interest is assiduous. La mesonera del cielo takes up the theme of Abraham and the redeemed courtesan, already treated by the nun Hrotsvitha. The comedy El esclavo del demonio, a reworking of the legend of Gil de Santarem who bargains his soul with the devil and then redeems it through harsh penances, was considered by M. Pelayo a worthy younger sister of El condenado por desconfiado by Tirso de Molina.
