AUGUSTO MUSSINI, BROTHER PAOLO. - Painter, born in Reggio Emilia on 20 January 1870, died in Rome on 1 November 1918. He soon made a name for himself as the author of fine portraits and genre compositions, in keeping with the fashion of the late 19th century, and in 1903 he entered the Franciscan Order under the name of Brother Paolo.
From then on, his interest turned decisively towards sacred subject painting, and he sought to reinvigorate the tradition through the study of Italy’s past sacred art and the contributions of modern pictorial culture.
His principal works include the frescoes in the church of the Capuchins at Borgo Solestà in Ascoli Piceno, the portrait of Fr Bernardino Gavassi in the Capuchin convent of Ascoli Piceno, *Visione Francescana* for the church of the Capuchins in Faenza, and the *Misteri del Rosario* for the church of San Gregorio in Caldarola. Other paintings of his are in the church of Quintodecimo, near Ascoli Piceno, and in the churches of the Capuchins in Ancona and Jesi.
