LUIGI MUSSINI. - Painter, born in Berlin on 19 Dec. 1813, died in Siena on 18 June 1888.
A pupil of Bezzuoli at the Florentine Academy, he took part in the purist movement, spent time in Rome and Paris where he met Ingres. In 1851 he was appointed director of the Siena Academy, where he worked until his death, also contributing to sacred art by designing the cartoons for the musical scenes on the façade of Siena Cathedral depicting the Nativity and the Assumption, and painting for the same cathedral a canvas portraying St Crescentius.
