NARCISSO, SANTO

NARCISSUS, Saint. - He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on Oct. 29, but it is not established that he had a cult in antiquity; he was introduced into the Martyrology by Ado.

He succeeded Dolichianus in the bishopric of Jerusalem between 180 and 192 (reign of Commodus). In the 1st he took part in the Synod of Palestine, convoked by order of Pope Victor to decide on the paschal question. Accused by certain slanderers, he left the see and withdrew into the desert, but the accusers were overtaken by divine justice and perished according to their false oaths. He later returned to Jerusalem, and since he was very old he chose as his coadjutor Alexander of Cappadocia. M. after 212 at over 116 years of age.
