Nazaré, Diocese of

NAZARÉ, DIOCESIS of. – City and diocese in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil.

The diocese covers an area of 5,556 sq km, with a population of 480,681 inhabitants. It has 22 parishes, served by 25 diocesan and 7 religious priests, 1 male religious community (Carmelites), and 11 female communities. In the diocese there are 164 catechetical centers with 10,970 pupils. Catholic institutions include 25 primary schools, 6 secondary schools, and 3 teacher-training schools. The diocese also has a weekly diocesan newspaper: La Gazzetta di N.

The diocese was created by Pope Benedict XV through the apostolic constitution Archidioecesis Olindensis-Recipensis of 2 August 1918, by division of the archdiocese of Olinda, assigning 18 parishes to the new diocese of N. and raising to cathedral status the parish church of N., dedicated to Maria S.ma. The diocese is suffragan to Olinda.
