NAZARÉ, DIOCESE OF
City and diocese in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil.
The diocese covers an area of 5,556 sq. km. with a population of 480,681. It has 22 parishes, served by 25 diocesan priests and 7 religious priests, 6 male religious communities (Carmelites) and 11 female. In the diocese there are 164 catechetical centers with 10,970 pupils. The Catholic institutions include 25 primary schools, 6 secondary schools and 3 normal schools. The diocese also owns a weekly diocesan newspaper: *La Gazzetta di N.*
The diocese was erected by Pope Benedict XV with the apostolic constitution *Archidioecesis Oliiendensis-Reciensis* of 2 Aug. 1918, by detaching it from the archdiocese of Olinda, assigning to the new diocese of N. 18 parishes and elevating the parish church of N., dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to the status of cathedral. The diocese is a suffragan of Olinda.

According to the most common hypothesis, it would be identified with the Gospel according to the Hebrews (v.), which St. Jerome says he found in the community of the N. at Berea (Aleppo) in Celesyria, and which he translated into Greek and Latin (*De viris ill.*, 2).
According to A. Schmidtke, however, the G. of the N. would be an Aramaic version (Targum) of our Greek Matthew, drawn up at Berea about 150. It would correspond to that cited as τὸ Ἰουδαϊκόν in some Greek manuscripts of Matthew. According to H. Waitz it would originally have been written in Greek and later translated into Aramaic. It would depend on a pre-canonical Greek Matthew. The pericope of the adulteress would have passed from the G. of the N. to Jn 8:1-11.
