NAZARENES, GOSPEL of the. - According to the most common hypothesis, it should be identified with the Gospel according to the Hebrews (v.), which St. Girolamo says he found among the community of the n. at Berea (Aleppo) in Celesiria, and translated into Greek and Latin (De viris ill., 2).
According to A. Schmidtke, however, the Gospel of the n. would be an Aramaic version (Targum) of our Greek Matthew, composed at Berea around 150. It would correspond to that cited as τὸ Ἰουδαϊκόν in certain Greek manuscripts of Matthew. According to H. Waitz, it would originally have been written in Greek and later translated into Aramaic. It would depend upon a pre-canonical Greek Matthew. The pericope of the adulteress would have passed from the Gospel of the n. into John 8, 1-11.
