GOSPEL OF THE NAZARENES. - According to the most common hypothesis, it is to be identified with the Gospel according to the Hebrews (v.), which St. Jerome says he found among the community of the Nazarenes at Berea (Aleppo) in Coele-Syria, and which he translated into Greek and Latin (De viris ill., 2).
According to A. Schmidtke, on the other hand, the Gospel of the Nazarenes would be an Aramaic version (Targum) of our Greek Matthew, composed at Berea around 150. It would correspond to the one cited as τὸ Ἰουδαϊκόν in certain Greek codices of Matthew. According to H. Waitz, it would have been written originally in Greek and later translated into Aramaic. It would depend on a pre-canonical Greek Matthew. The pericope of the adulteress would have passed from the Gospel of the Nazarenes into Jn. 8:1-11.
