New Segovia, Diocese of

NUOVA SEGOVIA, DIOCESI of. — Diocese in the province of Ilocos Sur in the Philippine Islands.

It has an area of 11,559 sq. km., with 851,673 inhabitants, of whom 589,676 are Catholics, distributed among 80 parishes, served by 102 diocesan priests and 49 religious; it has 1 seminary, 3 male and 15 female religious communities (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 294).

The diocese was created by Pope Clement VIII on 14 Aug.

1595 as a suffragan of Manila. Around the middle of the eighteenth century, the residence was transferred to Vigan. As a result of successive divisions, the territory was progressively reduced and today comprises the civil provinces of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, and Luzon.
