PANNIER, EUGENE. – Exegete and Orientalist, born in Amicus in 1854, died in Lille on 13 January 1937. Substitute professor (1893) and then full professor (1896) of Sacred Scripture at the Faculty of Theology of Lille, he was dean of this Faculty three times (1905–1908, 1914–19, 1922–25), and canon of Cambrai (1903) and Lille (1914). He was appointed a member of the Biblical Commission on 28 December 1908. He taught until his death.
His principal work is the study Les Psaumes d'après l'hébreu (Lille 1908), revised and substantially reworked in Les Psaumes (La Ste Bible by L. Pirot, 5, Paris 1937), a volume published shortly after his death. He also wrote Le nouveau Psaum du Bréviaire romain (there 1913).
Among his other publications, the following should be mentioned: Patrum ac theologorum Orientalis Ecclesiae thees selectae quinquaginta (1884); Genealogiae Biblicae cum monumentis Aegyptiorum et Chaldaeorum collatae (1886); Etudes bibliques (8 fascicles, from 1895 to 1904); numerous articles in the Revue de Lille (from 1893 to 1897), and reports in the DB. At the time of Loisy’s condemnation (16 December 1903), he wrote a much-noted article, Critique et exégèse, in Revue des sciences ecclésiastiques, 1904, pp. 3–36.
