PANNIER, EUGENE. - Exegete and orientalist, b. at Amicus in 1854, d. at Lille on 13 Jan. 1937. Substitute professor (1893) and holder (1896) of the chair of Sacred Scripture at the Faculty of Theology of Lille, he was three times dean of this Faculty (1905-1908, 1914-19, 1922-25), and canon of Cambrai (1903) and of Lille (1914). He was appointed a member of the Biblical Commission on 28 Dec. 1908. He taught until his death.
His principal work is the study on Les Psaumes d'après l'hébreu (Lille 1908), taken up again and profoundly revised in Les Psaumes (La Ste Bible by L. Pirot, 5, Paris 1937), a volume published shortly after his death. To him is also owed Le nouveau Psaum du Bréviaire romain (ibid. 1913).
Among his other publications, the following are to be cited: Patrum ac theologorum Orientalis Ecclesiae thees selectae quinquaginta (1884); Genealogiae Biblicae cum monumentis Aegyptiorum et Chaldaeorum collatae (1886); Etudes bibliques (8 fasc., from 1895 to 1904); numerous articles in the Revue de Lille (from 1893 to 1897) and reports in the DB. At the time of the condemnation of Loisy (16 Dec. 1903) he wrote a much-noted article, Critique et exégèse, in Revue des sciences ecclésiastiques, 1904, pp. 3-36. He published numerous reviews in Les questions ecclésiastiques, the bulletin of the Faculty of Theology of Lille.
