PANNIER, Eugène. - Orientalist and exegete, b. at Amiens in 1854, d. at Lille on 13 Jan. 1937. He served as substitute professor (1853) and titular professor (1866) of Sacred Scripture at the Faculty of Theology in Lille, and was three times dean of this Faculty (1905-1908, 1914-19, 1922-25), as well as canon of Cambrai (1903) and of Lille (1914). He was appointed a member of the Biblical Commission on 28 Dec. 1908. He taught until his death.
His principal work is the study on Les Psaumes d'après l'hébreu (Lille 1908), revised and substantially reworked in Les Psaumes (La Ste Bible of L. Pirot, 5, Paris 1937), a volume published shortly after his death. He also authored Le nouveau Psautier du Bréviaire romain (ibid. 1913).
Among his other publications, the following are noteworthy: Patrum ac theologorum Orientalis Ecclesiae theses selectae quinquantina (1884); Genealogiae Biblicae cum monumentis Aegyptiorum et Chaldaeorum collatae (1886); Etudes bibliques (8 fascicles, from 1895 to 1904); numerous articles in the Revue de Lille (from 1893 to 1897) and reports in the DB. At the time of the condemnation of Loisy (16 Dec. 1903), he wrote a highly noted article, Critique et exégèse, in Revue des sciences ecclésiastiques, 1904, pp. 3-36. He published numerous reviews in Les questions ecclésiastiques, the bulletin of the Faculty of Theology in Lille.
