GUÉRIN, VICTOR-RENÉ. - Scholar of Palestine, b. in Paris on 15 Sept. 1821, d. at La Tour (Seine-et-Marne) on 21 Sept. 1890.
He was a professor in various cities (1843–52, 1855, 1859), a student at the French School of Athens (1853), but above all an explorer. Over twenty-five years he made seven journeys to the Holy Land (1854, 1863, 1870, 1875, 1882, 1884, and 1888); others to the Greek islands (1854), to Egypt and Nubia (1857, 1886), to the Regency of Tunis (1860, 1885), and to Tripolitania and Malta (1885).
He published: De ora Palestinae a promontorio Carmelo usque ad urbem Ioppen pertinente (1855), a doctoral thesis; Etude sur l'île de Rhodes (1856). Travel accounts: Description de l'île de Patmos et de l'île de Samos (1856); Voyage archéologique dans la régence de Tunis (1862); La France catholique en Tunisie, à Malte et en Tripolitaine (1886); La France catholique en Egypte (1887). His principal work remains: Description géographique historique et archéologique de la Palestine: Iudée (3 vols., 1869), Samarie (2 vols., 1875), Galilée (2 vols., 1880).
