PAULINUS OF PELLA. - Christian poet, probably a nephew of the poet Ausonius, b. in 376 at Pella in Macedonia, d. shortly after 460 in southern France.

From the age of three he lived at Bordeaux. After suffering great reversals of fortune in the wake of the invasion of 406 and the sack of his city by the Goths in 412, he was converted in 421. At the age of 83 (459) he composed an autobiographical poem: Eucharisticos Deo sub ephemeridis meae aestu, in which he expresses his gratitude to God in 616 hexameters, very simple, full of reminiscences of Virgil, Ausonius, Paulinus of Nola, Marius Victor; an interesting document of a turbulent era, which makes it possible to understand the state of Christian society at the decline of the Western Empire.
