PIGHI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. — Moral theologian and historian, b. at Parona in 1847, d. at Verona on 23 Feb. 1926.
Graduated in theology at the Gregorian University, he taught moral theology for 40 years and ecclesiastical history for 30 at the Seminary of Verona, highly esteemed by his students, deeply loved and sought after for advice by the clergy whom he directed as vicar general for 13 years.
His principal work is the *Cursus theologiae moralis* in 4 vols. (6th ed. ed. A. Grazioli, Verona 1946-47). Also noteworthy are: *De iudicio sacramentali* (ibid. 1896); *Censura CIC* (ibid. 1921); *De Matrimonio* (ibid. 1924). His moral theology is inspired by pure probabilism: it has a practical, pastoral tone and is informed by a deep sense of piety and orthodoxy. His principal work as a historian is the *Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae* (3 vols.), with apologetic aims, criticized for its method and arrangement of material.
