REBEIRÃO PRETO, DIOCESE OF. – A suffragan diocese of the archdiocese of S. Paulo, in the same-named state of Brazil.

It covers an area of 26,547 sq. km., with a population of 1,007,200 inhabitants, of whom 819,700 are Catholic. It comprises 55 parishes, served by 20 diocesan priests and 83 regular clergy. There is a minor seminary, 14 male religious communities, and 39 female.

The diocese was erected by Decree of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation on 7 June 1908, carved out of the diocese of S. Paulo, with the church of S. Sebastiao raised to cathedral status.

Its first bishop was Msgr. Alberto José Gonçalves, who governed it for 36 years.
