ROYER-COLLARD, PIERRE-PAUL. - Philosopher and politician, b. June 21, 1763 at Sompuis (Champagne), d. Sept. 4, 1845 at Châteauvieux near St-Agnon. He taught at the University of Paris from 1811 to 1820. He was president of the Chamber in 1828.
In philosophy he is a realist and a spiritualist. Inspired by T. Reid (v.) he combats the philosophy of sensation (v.), of which he sees the principal representative in Condillac (v.), and affirms the philosophy of perception (v.). He holds, that is, that there are given not only sensations (consciousness of our subjective states) but perceptions, that is, immediate apprehensions of things existing outside us. The subject has consciousness of the ego (v.) as a permanent substance and as a cause (v.), and perception allows him to attribute these three notions to external things. From the causality of things it is possible to ascend to the existence of God. In politics, R.-C. is a supporter of constitutional monarchy.
