SABETTI, Luigi. — Moral theologian, b. at Roseto-Valfortore (Foggia) on 3 Jan. 1839, d. at Baltimore on 28 Nov. 1898.
Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1860, the political upheavals of the time compelled him to complete his studies in France and then to emigrate to the United States (1871), where, instead of proceeding to mission work among the Pelli, he was appointed professor of moral theology in the scholasticate at Woodstock. He deserves credit for modernizing the work of Fr. P. Gury, adapting it to the Anglo-Saxon world in his Compendium Theologiae moralis (Cincinnati 1884; 33rd ed. ed. T. Barret, 11 1931), which is esteemed not only for its doctrine but also for the clarity and precision of its exposition. Also valuable is his Decre’s Quemadmodum (17 Dec. 1890) with explanations (Baltimore 1892); and his contribution to the founding of the American Ecclesiastical Review, where from the outset he published solutions to moral cases.
