SABETTI, LUIGI. - Moral theologian, b. at Roseto-Valfortore (Foggia) on 3 Jan. 1839, d. at Baltimore on 28 Nov. 1898.
Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1860, the political disturbances of the time compelled him to pursue his studies in France and then to emigrate to the United States (1871), where, instead of going to the mission among the Native Americans, he was given the chair of moral theology at the scholasticate of Woodstock. He deserves credit for having modernized the work of Fr. P. Gury, adapting it to the Anglo-Saxon world, with his Compendium Teologiae moralis (Cincinnati 1884; 33rd ed., edited by T. Barret, there 1931), esteemed not only for its doctrine but also for the clarity and precision of its exposition. Also valuable is his Decree's Quemadmodum (17 dic. 1890) with explanations (Baltimore 1892); as well as the contribution he made to the founding of the American Ecclesiastical Review, where from the outset he published solutions to cases of moral theology.
