SAN LEONE. – A city in Calabria, also known as Leonia in ancient times, located near Crotone, was the seat of a small diocese within the metropolitan see of S. Severina. Its origins are unknown.
No bishop of S. L. is recorded before 1300, but the existence of the diocese is attested in the *Rationes Camerae Apostolicae* (VII, f. 85) as early as 1282. It was suppressed by St. Pius V on November 7, 1571, and its territory was annexed to S. Severina.
