SAN SALVATORE DI MESSINA. - It is the most important of the Greek monasteries of southern Italy. It was founded "in lingua Phari" by Roger II the Norman, who entrusted the task to St. Bartholomew of Simeri (v.). The latter, after laying its foundations around 1122, sent there from the Patirion of Rossano his disciple Luke, with 12 monks, half of the codices and relics and a good sum of money. The construction of the monastery was completed in 1132; but King Roger II had issued its Constitution as early as May 1131, enriching it with privileges and donations, elevating it to the dignity of archimandrite and subjecting to its jurisdiction 40 Greek monasteries, of which 14 were in Calabria. In 1134 the archimandrite Luke collected its statutory norms in his Typikon. Its power increased enormously with successive donations, and the archimandrite several times withstood, for jurisdictional reasons, the archbishop of Messina. It followed the fortunes of Greek monasticism in Italy.
Bessarion attempted in vain to revive its fortunes. Charles V transformed it into a castle, transferring it to the shore of Peloro. The Library, rich in precious Greek codices, was plundered during the viceregal period; only 70 codices have been saved, which are currently in the University Library.
