Santa Rosa de Copán, Diocese of

SANTA ROSA DE COPÁN, DIOCESI. — City and diocese comprising the civil provinces of S. Barbara, Copán, Lempira, Ocotepeque, and Intibucá in Honduras (Central America).

It has an area of 16,700 sq km and a population of 509,740, all Catholics; it has 24 parishes served by 26 diocesan priests and 5 religious priests; it has one seminary, 2 male and 2 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1952, p. 364). The diocese was erected by Benedict XV on 2 February 1916, by separation from the diocese of Comoyagua, as a suffragan of Tegucigalpa.
