SANTUCCI, PIETRO DA MANFREDONIA

Pietro da Manfredonia SANTUCCI. — Celestine monk, abbot of the monastery of S. Spirito della Maiella, b. 20 Aug. 1562, d. 1 Feb. 1641. After his profession he was assigned to the hermitage of the Maiella, where he revived the fervor of its early days.

Of keen and lively intellect, he delved deeply into theology, studying especially St. Bonaventure, and practiced with great skill the arts of drawing, sculpture, and architecture, adorning the church with paintings and sculptures and enriching it with sacred relics. He was endowed with various mystical gifts, freed the possessed, and through his prayers and blessings healed many of the sick.
