SEPHARVAIM. – A city of the Assyrian Empire, from which the “king of Assyria,” probably Sargon II, as from the centers of Cuthah, Avah, and Hamath, had emigrants or colonists recruited, with whom to repopulate the cities of Samaria, left uninhabited by the recent deportations (II Reg. 17:24). It is identified with Sabarim of Ez. 47:16, a city of Syria, between Hamath, with which it is mentioned, and Damascus.
