SERMINI GENTILE, DA SIENA. - Traditional but not certain author of "uno paneretto d'insalatella", a kind of miscellany and book of recollections in verse and prose, interspersed with 40 novellas, of which the last is unfinished, heard told at the Baths of Petriolo.
From novella XII it is known that S., having taken refuge from the plague of 1424 on a nearby mountain, found there a likable priest, but such uncouth mountaineers that he was forced to return to his city, near the woman he loved; there, to please a friend, he gathered his scattered writings "per scartabelli e squarciafogli". He collects and recounts without a precise design, without obvious influences to communicate other than that of Boccaccio, with a spontaneous style and a rustic tongue; now vivid and now prolix, now delicate and now coarse, now moralizing and now lewd.
