SICULO-NORMAN ART. — Also called Siculo-Arab-Norman art: this is the name historians of the 19th century gave to the Sicilian artistic manifestations of the Romanesque period.
This term aims to define in space — Sicily — and in time — the period of Norman domination on the island — the manifestations of a taste which, even if it truly has no examples outside Sicily, cannot be considered anything more than a very small part of the results of Norman cultural contributions to the island. Therefore, modern writers prefer the alternative terms Sicilian Romanesque art or Sicilian art of the Romanesque period.
