SICULO-NORMAN, ART. - Also called Siculo-Arab-Norman art: it is the name that 19th-century historians assigned to the Sicilian artistic manifestations of the Romanesque period.That denomination was intended to define in space — Sicily — and in time — the period of the Norman domination of the island — the manifestations of a taste which, if it truly has no examples outside Sicily, can certainly be considered only to a very minimal extent the fruit of the contributions of a Norman culture in the island. Therefore, in place of that denomination, modern writers prefer the other one of Romanesque art in Sicily or Sicilian art of the Romanesque period.
