SICULO NORMANNA, ARTE. – Also called Siculo-Arab-Norman art: this is the designation that nineteenth-century historians assigned to the artistic manifestations of Sicily during the Romanesque period.
This designation seeks to define, in space—Sicily—and in time—the period of Norman rule on the island—the manifestations of a taste which, even if it truly has no examples outside Sicily, can certainly be regarded only to a very minimal extent as the product of the contributions of a Norman culture in the island. Accordingly, modern writers prefer to that designation the alternative of Romanesque art in Sicily or Sicilian art of the Romanesque period. Emilio Lavagnino
