SLUTER, CLAUS. - Sculptor, probably b. in Haarlem during the first half of the 14th century, d. at Dijon between Sept. 1405 and Jan. 1406.
He appears as one of the masters of the French late-Gothic manner in the sculptures he executed at Dijon, where he moved, like Jean de Marville, from his native Low Countries, at a date earlier than 1385. His most important works are, besides the famous Well of Moses in the Charterhouse of Champmol, where the theme of the Fountain of Blood and of the Redemption is developed, the tomb of Philip the Bold, today in the Museum of Dijon, which he began but which was brought to completion after his death by Claus de Werve, and the portal of the same Charterhouse of Champmol. This is one of the most notable monuments of Burgundian sculpture of that age, for the plastic realism of the images animated by a sense of fiery oratory that reaches the heights of the most inspired lyricism.
The influence exercised by S. on contemporary sculpture was very vast and spread beyond the borders of Burgundy, then among the liveliest centers of sculpture in central Europe. - See pl. LI.
