SERRA, JUNIPERO. - Franciscan friar, in the world Miguel, b. at Petra (Majorca) on 24 Nov. 1731, d. at Monterey (California) on 28 Aug. 1784.
On 14 Sept. 1730 he took the Franciscan habit. He received his doctorate in theology at Palma, where for some time he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Majorca. On 1 Jan. 1750 he arrived in Mexico City and in the College of St. Fer-

Having returned to Bologna, he frescoed (1886) in the vault of the hall of the Provincial Council Irnerio Glossing the Ancient Laws, his last work.
A most acute draughtsman, incisive, of an almost mathematical precision, by which he obtains effects that are downright stereoscopic, S. constantly harbored a longing for a color equally vivid and effective. But because he always conceived of color as an element in itself, divorced from drawing, his paintings, although clear and lively in tints, sometimes almost porcelain-like, lack chromatic vitality, since a drawing almost always clearly defined with dark or violet lines bounds the fields of color, stifling every vibration.
