in the State of Ohio, U. S. A.
The diocese covers an area of 5,913 sq. miles,
with a total population (1950 census) of
485,735 inhabitants, of whom 60,245 are Catholics. There are 106
diocesan priests (13 religious: Third Order Regular of
S. Francesco), 66 parishes, 2 chapels, 14 missions,
14 women’s congregations (250 sisters), 1 seminary
(34 seminarians), 1 college, and 2 hospitals.
The ecclesiastical province of Denver was established in
1942, that of Indianapolis in 1944; the diocese of Young-
stown was erected in 1943, that of S. in 1944. In 1945
the province of Omaha and the diocese of Ma-
dison were also created; in 1947 the diocese
of Austin, and in 1948 the diocese of Joliette.
By the apostolic constitution Dioecesium in orbe catholico, Pio
XII separated S. from the diocese of Columbus and made it
a suffragan of Cincinnati.
