Stirling, James Hutchison

STIRLING, JAMES HUTCHISON. - English philosopher, b. 22 Jan. 1820 in Glasgow, d. 19 March 1909 in Edinburgh, at whose University he had been professor of moral philosophy.

A thinker of scant originality, he has a relative historical importance, in that with him Anglo-American neo-Hegelian idealism may be said to begin. Besides minor writings (among them Sir W. Hamilton, being the philosophy of perception, 1865; What is Thought, 1900), mention should be made of the essay The secret of Hegel (1865; 2nd ed., Edinburgh 1898), in which he expounds and defends the system of the German philosopher. For Stirling, there is a close relation between Kant and Hegel, whose philosophy is a necessary consequence of criticism (v.). This is the "secret of Hegel."
