TACAMBARO, DIOCESE OF. – City and diocese in the district of Mexico, in the State of Michoacán (Republic of Mexico).
It has an area of 30,000 sq. km. with a population of 250,500 inhabitants, of whom 250,000 are Catholic; it comprises 27 parishes served by 44 diocesan priests; it has a seminary and 8 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 413).
The diocese was erected by decree of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation on 26 July 1913, taking 7 parishes from the diocese of Yucatán and 16 from the diocese of Zamora. Its first bishop, Mgr. Leopoldo Lara, took possession of the diocese only in 1920. It is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Morelia.
