TACÁMBARO, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in the district of Mexico, in the State of Michoacan (Republic of Mexico).

It has an area of 30,000 sq km and a population of 250,500 inhabitants, of whom 250,000 are Catholics; it has 27 parishes served by 44 diocesan priests; it has a seminary and 8 women’s religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 413).

The diocese was erected by decree of the S. Congregation of the Council on 26 July 1913, with 7 parishes from the diocese of Yucatán and 16 from the diocese of Zamora. Its first bishop, Msgr. Leopoldo Lara, took possession of the diocese only in 1920. It is suffragan to the archdiocese of Morelia.
