TACNA, Diocese of. - Diocese and city in the Republic of Peru.

It has an area of 27,122 sq km with a population of 125,000 inhabitants, of whom 120,000 are Catholics, distributed in 16 parishes, served by 17 diocesan priests and 1 regular; it has a seminary, 1 male religious community and 4 female ones (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 413). The diocese was created by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution Nihil potius of 18 Dec. 1944, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Arequipa, elevating the parish church of St. Peter in T. to the rank and dignity of cathedral and as a suffragan of Arequipa (v.).
