TACNA, DIOCESE of. — Diocese and city in the Republic of Peru.
It has an area of 27,122 sq. km., with a population of 125,000 inhabitants, of whom 120,000 are Catholics, distributed among 16 parishes, served by 17 diocesan priests and 1 religious priest; it has a seminary, 1 male religious community
and 4 female ones (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 413). The diocese was created by Pope Pius XII by the apostolic constitution Nihil potius of 18 December 1944, through the dismemberment of the archdiocese of Arequipa, raising the parish church of St. Peter in T. to the rank and dignity of a cathedral and Arequipa (v.).
