TAVERNA, GIUSEPPE. - Priest, educator, b. at Piacenza on 14 March 1764, d. at Parma on 20 Apr. 1820.
Ordained a priest, he was a teacher at Piacenza, in the college of S. Pietro, where he had as a pupil the twelve-year-old Pietro Giordani; at Brescia (1812-22) in the Peroni college; in 1825 he was entrusted by Maria Luisa with the Lalatta college at Brescia; when this closed in 1831, he led a life of hardship, somewhat alleviated in 1848, when the revolutionary government appointed him honorary professor of philosophy.
He had the impulse to write for children both from the burning desire to educate them soundly and from his knowledge of the little magazine L'ami des Enfants, published by A. Berquin. Of his works the most notable and the most widely read were: Novelle morali ad istruzione dei fanciulli (Parma 1800); Racconti storici (ibid. 1803); Le prime letture dei fanciulli (ibid. 1808). All this narrative is modeled on the life of children, on the most common events of their lives, on the sphere of the family, and is developed with freshness of feeling and gentleness of expression. Nor has it even today lost its beneficial efficacy; were it not that the ornate, affected, and at times prolix style alienates young readers.
