TEMPESTI, CASIMIRO LIBORIO

TEMPESTI, CASIMIRO LIBORIO. — Historian and ascetical writer of the Friars Minor Conventual, born in Florence toward the end of the seventeenth century, died there in 1758.

He was secretary general of the Order (1749–50), guardian of S. Croce in Florence (1756), and then provincial of Tuscany until his death.

A renowned preacher and great scholar, among his principal works are: S. Bonaventura..., maestro esimio di spirito, ovvero mistica teologia secondo lo spirito e le sentenze del Santo (2 vols., Lucca 1746); Esercizi spirituali giusto il metodo e le dottrine di s. Bonaventura (2 vols., Venice 1756); various panegyrics. He left in manuscript dramatic and lyric poems, paraphrases of Jeremiah’s Lamentations and the Penitential Psalms, and l’Anno santificato di Maria (1758). His name, however, is chiefly associated with the history of the life and deeds of Sixtus V (2 vols., Rome 1754, edited by his confrere Fr. L. A. Fenati; 2nd ed., ibid. 1866), extensively used by A. de Hubner in his analogous Storia (ed. 1754, I, p. xvi).

the will. Among these are: renunciation of some licit pleasure, custody of the senses, mindfulness of the presence of God and of one’s own dignity, frequent reception of the Sacraments, devotion to Mary. In this regard, it is worth noting that Catholic morality has never conceived perfection as the suppression of tendencies and appetites, but as their proper governance.
