TERZIARI CARMELITANI SCALZI DEL MALABAR DI RITO LATINO. — Founded on 26 April 1874 by Mons. Leonardo Mellano, Archbishop of Verapoly, at Manjummel (Malabar).
They were approved by the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide on 9 February 1904. On 31 May 1951, they were aggregated to the Carmelite Order as a kind of missionary province. The institute’s specific purpose is the preaching of missions and spiritual exercises, and the apostolate of the press. Indeed, since 1876 it has published the first Catholic periodical in the Malayalam language, Nada-Kahalam. At present there are 57 professed members in 7 houses; the general house is at Manjummel.
