TERZAGO, NICOLA. - Moral theologian and mystic, b. in Rome in 1679. Learned and pious, in 1721 he was appointed titular bishop of Samaria and auxiliary of Ostia and Velletri, and in Jan. 1724 bishop of Narni, where he died on 29 Aug. 1761, greatly deserving of that church.
T. must be remembered especially as a moral theologian and mystic.
Published works: Istruzione pratica sopra la fedele amministrazione del sacramento della Penitenza (Rome 1753, 1763, 1769, 1823; Venice 1770; 1824; Rome-Venice 1817); Theologia historico-mystica adversus veteres et novos pseudomysticos (Venice 1764), very rare, and still much cited by theologians of mysticism and regarded as the best history and confutation of spiritual errors. It was abridged by Msgr. Chaillot: Principes de théologie mystique (Paris 1866); and by Card. Casimiro Gennari: Del falso misticismo (2nd ed. Rome 1907). T.'s name, however, is found passed over in silence.
