SPINA, ALFONSO LOPEZ de. – Friar Minor, formerly a Jew, learned theologian, illustrious for piety and doctrine, effective preacher, rector of the Minorite Studium of Salamanca and bishop Thermopolitanus (1491); died circa 1491 in the Palentino convent of the province of the Conception.
One of his works, intended to arm the faithful against heretics, achieved considerable success, under the title Fortalitium fidei (Strasbourg n.d. [ca. 1471]; Basel n.d. [ca. 1475]; Nuremberg 1485, 1594, 1525; Lyons 1487 and 1511), judged «opus eruditum, splendido titulo, voce barbara, et divinarum rerum cognitione praestanti». He also left manuscripts: Sermones de excellentia nostrae fidei; Tractatus de fortuna dicatum Joanni Castellae Regi; Sermones 22 de nomine Jem.
