SPINA, BARTOLOMEO. - Dominican theologian, b. in Pisa in 1475, d. in Rome in 1546.

A lecturer in philosophy and theology, he taught for more than twenty years in the general studia of the Order in Bologna and Verona. In 1526 he was appointed professor at the University of Padua and came out openly against Pomponazzi and Gaetano in the much-debated question of the immortality of the soul. A follower of nominalism, he was also an opponent of Catarino, especially in the doctrine of grace and justification. In 1542 Paul III, who esteemed his profound learning, appointed him master of the Sacred Palace and chose him as his trusted theologian in the various questions debated in that period of preparation for the Council, and in the first phase of the Council of Trent. He also left a fair number of philosophical and theological writings.
