LUCIO SANSEVERINO. — Cardinal, born in Naples in 1565 to the princes of Bisignano, died in Salerno on 25 December 1623.
Archbishop of Rossano from 1592, he distinguished himself for pastoral zeal in promoting the Tridentine reform among the clergy. Transferred to the see of Salerno (1612), he carried out the pastoral visitation, celebrated the Synod and the provincial Council (1615). For his skill, in 1619 he was sent as nuncio to the Low Countries, receiving as a reward for his work the cardinalate in 1621. He took part in the Conclave of 1623, in which he was one of the papabili, being esteemed by all and distinguished for his immaculate life and great learning. He died as a result of the hardships suffered during the Conclave.
