SANSEVERINO, LUCIO. - Cardinal, born in Naples in 1565 to the princes of Bisignano, died in Salerno on 25 December 1623.
Archbishop of Rossano from 1592, he distinguished himself by his pastoral zeal in promoting the Tridentine reform among the clergy. Transferred to the see of Salerno (1612), he carried out the pastoral visitation there, and celebrated the Synod and the Provincial Council (1615). Because of his ability, in 1619 he was sent as nuncio to the Netherlands, receiving the cardinalate in 1621 as a reward for the work he had done. He took part in the Conclave of 1623, in which he was one of the papabili, being esteemed by all and distinguished for his immaculate life and great learning. He died as a result of the hardships suffered during the Conclave.
