STEPHEN OF THIERS, Saint. - Born in 1048, died at Muret, near Limoges, on 8 February 1124, canonized by Clement III on 21 March 1189. At the age of 12, taken by his father to Bari to venerate the relics of St. Nicholas, he stayed for 12 years at Benevento with the holy archbishop Milone, who educated him piously.

Having then gone to Rome, he obtained from Gregory VII (1073) permission to institute an Order. Returning to his homeland, he withdrew to Mount Muret (1076), where for 50 years he led a life of perfection with some disciples. Having exhorted his companions to perseverance, he died 8 days after the visit of two cardinal legates. A short time after his death his companions moved to Grandmont, and from this place the Congregation of the blessed S. took its name; from eremitical it was transformed in time into cenobitic, and in 1610 it was reformed by Fr. Charles Fremont. Feast 8 February.
