TUBALCAIN

Also known as: Greek: Θοβέλ καὶ Ἦν

TUBAL-CAIN (Heb. Túbhal Qájin, Septuagint Θοβέλ καὶ Ἦν). - Son of Lamech (v.), a descendant in the fifth degree from Cain. He "sharpened (that is, began the art of sharpening) every tool of copper and iron" (Gen. 4:22): a detail within the complex of the formation of material civilization, attributed to the Cainites. Babylonian traditions also speak of the antediluvian origins of metalworking (fragment "When Anu created heaven" in H. Gressmann, Altor. Texte, Berlin-Leipzig 1926, p. 129).

The Hebrew double name is singular, in which some critics consider the second part -qájin to be secondary.
