UMTATA, DIOCESI of. – It is situated on the shores of the Indian Ocean in the eastern part of the Cape Province of the Union of South Africa.
Before 1922 the territory formed part of the apostolic vicariate of Natal, and from 1922 to 1930 of the apostolic vicariate of Mariannhill. On 30 March 1930 the territory, detached from the latter vicariate, was erected into an apostolic prefecture. On 10 January 1933 a boundary adjustment was made with the mission of Queenstown. On 13 April 1937 it was erected into an apostolic vicariate and on 11 January 1951 elevated to a diocese.
It has an area of approximately 50,000 sq. km, with 16,491 European inhabitants and 832,018 non-European inhabitants.
