UMTATA, DIOCESE OF. — It is situated on the coasts of the Indian Ocean in the eastern part of the Cape Province of the South African Union.
Before 1922 the territory formed part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Natal, and from 1922 to 1930 of the Apostolic Vicariate of Mariannhill. On 30 March 1930 the territory, detached from the latter vicariate, was erected into an Apostolic Prefecture. On 10 January 1933 a boundary adjustment took place with the mission of Queenstown. On 13 April 1937 it was erected into an Apostolic Vicariate and on 11 January 1951 elevated to a diocese.
It has an area of approximately 30,000 sq. km., with 16,491 European inhabitants, 832,018 non-European.
