UMTATA [MTHATHA], Diocese of. - It is situated on the coasts of the Indian Ocean in the eastern part of the Cape Province of the Union of South Africa.

Before 1922 the territory was part of the apostolic vicariate of Natal, and from 1922 to 1930 of the apostolic vicariate of Mariannhill. On 30 March 1930 the territory, detached from this latter vicariate, was erected into an apostolic prefecture. On 10 Jan. 1933 there was a rectification of boundaries with the mission of Queenstown. On 13 Apr. 1937 it was erected into an apostolic vicariate, and on 11 Jan. 1951 elevated to a diocese.

It has an area of about 50,000 sq. km., with 16,491 European inhabitants and 832,018 non-European. European Catholics 880, of color 1480, natives 12,594, catechumens 853, priests 25, brothers 7, European sisters 129, native 38, catechists 42, churches 50, schools 47, hospitals 2, orphanages 4.
