VALENTINO, PAPA

VALENTINE, Pope. - In the year 827, the bishops, the nobility and the people wished the archdeacon V., born in the region of Via Lata, d. in Sept. 827, to be elected pontiff.

Enthroned in the Basilica of the Lateran, he was consecrated at St. Peter's. The Liber Pontificalis celebrates his virtues, which won him the affection of the Romans. He was distinguished, in fact, by his affability, his learning and a marvelous memory. Unfortunately, so worthy a Pope reigned only 40 days, or barely a month, according to the Annals attributed to Einhard. Jaffé cites no letter issued by his Chancery.
